What we do

What is the Head & Neck Cancer Foundation?

We are a charity devoted to driving awareness for, and the adoption of, groundbreaking head and neck cancer treatment. Our work aims to minimise the magnitude of surgery and limit the resulting aesthetical impacts, on head and neck cancer patients.

Treatment for head and neck cancers is still largely based on invasive surgery. What makes head and neck cancers different are the facial scars and life-changing impact surgery can have on the vital functions of breathing, swallowing and speech. Current standard surgical procedures also impact the senses of sight, hearing, taste and smell.

Our face is the window to the world

We use our face to look out at the world. We are also perceived through it. So much of our face is vital in the way that we interact with the world around us and the way in which we are seen by others. That’s why disfigurement, scarring and loss of functionality in the head and neck area can be so destructive to our very being. Minimising the impact of surgery will help those with cancer to keep that window open.

Many cases can be caught early if people know what symptoms or signs to look for. We strive to educate the public on how to identify the symptoms of head and neck cancers. For these early cases of mouth cancer, we aim to make patients aware that they can request the pioneering Sentinel Node Biopsy technique - this can save over 70% of patients from enduring a neck dissection.
